Our Christmas Traditions

After reading Michigan House of Chaos recently, it made me think of our Christmas traditions. Like Jen and Steve, we take the boys out to look at Christmas lights in the nights before Christmas. Its something Ryan and I have done even before having kids and we really enjoy it.

On Christmas Eve, we always open one present. My parents did that for us as children and we will also do that with our boys. When I was young, it was a gift from my sister or brother. With our boys, it will be the gift sent to them from whichever cousin had their name in the name-draw. In years past, we have spent our Christmas Eve's with the Gazley side of the family and open the gift from the cousins, so we will continue that this year, but up in Paradise.

My favorite and most personal Christmas Tradition is our having cinnamon rolls for Breakfast on Christmas morning. It was something that Ryan started for me about 6 years ago on a not-so-merry Christmas morning for me. He got up very early, made me cinnamon rolls, tea, and when I got up, he even had a fire going for us. (No, we had no fire place. What we did have was a fireplace video!) It made me smile that morning and its something we have done ever since.

But the best thing about Christmas morning is watching the kids. The minute they look and see all the gifts under the tree and their eyes get wide and their jaws drop. I love to see them open the presents. How they open clothes and just toss them aside. The faces when they open something they really wanted. And once all the presents are unwrapped they play with each one for 10 minutes before insisting on opening the next toy to play with. All this puts such a smile on my face and I love it. (I'll try to remember all this when in a few weeks I am complaining about all the crap that my kids have strewn around the house!)

So, what are YOUR traditions? I love to hear what others do around the holidays and if there are any special meanings behind any of them. Feel free to leave a note about your family's traditions in the comments section. I have this blog set up so anyone can comment, so no blogger account is needed!

Since we have moved away from family- we are starting our own traditions. Monkey Bread on Christmas morning was one I started this yearm but I think it will stick around for many more to come.
